SDG 1: No Poverty

Introduction

In this sense, SDG 1, which refers to “NO POVERTY”, IUL is a national project for the future that starts from a vision that responds to Lebanon’s need to enter the fields of modern knowledge and contemplates the generalization and deepening of the knowledge of its historical and contemporary terms from a balanced methodological perspective, as a basis for the advancement of the nation and the search for non-poverty.

SDG 1: No Poverty

The goal is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. Poverty is simple and complex. It is simple because it provides the income needed to meet basic needs, yet the hard part of it is trying to meet those basic needs. Goal No. 1 (SDG1) calls for ending poverty in all its manifestations by 2030. It also aims to ensure social protection for the poor and vulnerable, increase access to basic services and support people affected by climate phenomena and other economic, social and environmental conditions. This includes targeting the most vulnerable, increasing basic resources and services, and supporting communities affected by conflict and climate-related disasters.

The positive side is that absolute poverty will be less pronounced in the developing world by 2030, although more than one billion people will still live on less than two dollars a day. Therefore, the year 2030 will not represent the end of poverty by any reasonable measure, but we will strive with all our capabilities to alleviate poverty, according to the World Bank, it will certainly be possible by 2050 to end this absolute poverty in most of the developing world.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia “ESCWA” estimated that the percentage of the poor in Lebanon doubled to reach 55 percent in 2020, up from 28 percent in 2019. It added that the percentage of those suffering extreme poverty increased three times, from 8 percent to 23 percent, in the same period. And that “the total number of poor Lebanese has become more than 2.7 million, according to the highest poverty line (meaning the number of people living on less than 14 dollars a day). In practice, this means a significant erosion of the middle class, and a drop in the proportion of middle-income people to less than 40 percent of the population. She emphasized that the wealthy category is not immune to shocks, as it has also shrunk to a third of its size, from 15 percent in 2019 to 5 percent in 2020.

The main results of the Labor Force and Living Conditions Survey also showed that the unemployment rate in Lebanon is 11.4 percent, which is the ratio of the unemployed to the total workforce, while the unemployment rate among young people with a high educational level exceeded 35 percent among holders of a university degree. The number of residents in Lebanon during the survey period 2018-2019 was estimated at about 4.8 million, distributed between 80 percent of the Lebanese and 20 percent of non-Lebanese. As for the distribution of residents according to regions, the Mount Lebanon Governorate included the largest percentage, about 42 percent of residents, while the smaller percentage was in the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate, which included only 5.1 percent of residents, while the capital, Beirut, included 7.1 percent of residents.
