3.3.1 Does your university as a body have current collaborations with local or global health institutions to improve health & wellbeing outcomes?

The Islamic University of Lebanon (IUL) actively engages in collaborations with local and global health institutions to improve health and well-being outcomes. These partnerships focus on advancing health education, research, and community health initiatives. For example:

  1. Local Collaborations: IUL works with Lebanese healthcare providers and hospitals to offer practical training and internship opportunities for students in health-related fields, such as medicine, pharmacy, and nursing. These collaborations ensure that students gain hands-on experience while contributing to local health services.
  2. Research Initiatives: The university is involved in research projects addressing regional health challenges, such as public health issues, disease prevention, and mental health awareness. Collaborative efforts with Lebanese ministries and NGOs help align these projects with national health strategies.
  3. Global Collaborations: IUL partners with international universities and health organizations to exchange expertise and conduct joint research projects. These initiatives aim to develop best practices for addressing global health challenges and fostering innovation in healthcare delivery.

If you would like specific examples or documentation of these collaborations, I can assist in locating detailed reports or references.

Faculty collaborative community

The Islamic University of Lebanon (IUL) is committed to a robust collaboration with various Lebanese professional organizations to enhance the quality and reach of healthcare education and services. This partnership aims to meet the labor market’s growing demands by increasing the number of graduates while striving for excellence in healthcare practice, education, management, and research. These efforts are focused on improving the well-being of individuals and the broader Lebanese society, addressing the annual need for an 8% increase in healthcare workers.

To meet this growing demand, IUL actively engages with high schools by conducting visits and hosting exhibitions, encouraging students to pursue studies in the Faculty of Public Health.

IUL has also established formal agreements with hospitals across different regions, incentivizing professionally qualified employees to further their education and obtain university degrees (B.S.). These initiatives provide practical support, material resources, and substantial financial discounts of up to 50%.

Moreover, the Faculty of Public Health organizes various health-related activities, including the annual Health Day on May 12th, coinciding with International Nursing Day. During this event, free health services are provided to aid in the early detection of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and thalassemia. These services include complimentary health examinations, and health awareness is promoted through lectures and publications.

Additionally, IUL has joined forces with the Red Cross and the NGO Donner Sang Compter (DSC) to conduct blood donation campaigns. This collaboration highlights the university’s dedication to community service and public health. Through these campaigns, IUL not only helps save lives but also promotes awareness about the significance of blood donation among students and the wider community.

In terms of events for our nursing department at the public health faculty, we attempt to keep students engaged and motivated by organizing a variety of activities.  On May 15, 2024, our Tyr branch students, in partnership with the nursing coordinators at Tyr, arranged a nursing day celebration that included teaching on various medical issues, activities, and nursing services for all students.

Furthermore, on May 20, 2024, Mr. Rabih al Albdallahon delivered a high-performance and

expert-level first aid training session to BS2 nursing students in Tyr branch.

We also visited the nurses’ orders on Thursday, April 4, 2024, with a group of students from all branches. Our visit aimed to learn more about the nurse’s order, particularly the importance of affiliation and registration, registration procedures, internal regulations, and services provided.

Additionally, the Faculty of Public Health has entered into numerous collaborative agreements with local and national healthcare and educational institutions. These partnerships facilitate various aspects of scientific research and practical cooperation, providing essential training centers for IUL students.

SDG 3.3.1: Current collaborations with local and global health institutions to improve health & wellbeing outcomes

Good health about the body as well as about the mind is essential to us. Staying in good health is important to all of us, and can become particularly important in the future.

Lebanon has consistently improved its health system and registered relatively favourable indicators, despite internal challenges and external shocks. The ministry of public health has developed and implemented plans, aimed at reaching the sustainable development goals, which build on past successes. Lebanon is controlling and preventing disease outbreaks and ensuring universal access to healthcare services. The quality and coverage of health services have been improving. The ministry of public health has a network of 213 primary healthcare centers across the country, which provide services in collaboration with non-governmental organizations, the Ministry of Social Affairs, and municipalities, patients can see medical specialists at a reduced cost and receive basic and chronic disease medication and vaccines free Critical diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and others are fully covered by the ministry of public health. The strategy’s central goal for the ministry of public health is universal health coverage and it is based on the principle of ‘health as the right of each citizen’. Its strategic goals are:

  1. to modernize and strengthen MoPH’s executive and related administrations.
  2. to improve collective public health through prevention and promotion throughout the lifecycle of each individual, and in all stages/phases of life.
  3. to make concrete steps towards universal coverage of high quality, safe and affordable healthcare that priorities the poor and vulnerable.
  4. to strengthen capacity and systems for timely, accurate and reliable epidemiological surveillance intelligence for public health security and emergency preparedness and response.
