17.2.1 Does your university as a body have direct involvement in, or input into, national government SDG policy development - including identifying problems and challenges, developing policies and strategies, modelling likely futures with and without interventions, monitoring and reporting on interventions, and enabling adaptive management?

The Islamic University of Lebanon (IUL) actively contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) policy development at the national level. The university collaborates with government bodies and other stakeholders to:

  1. Identify Problems and Challenges: IUL conducts research that highlights critical issues in sustainable development, such as poverty alleviation, quality education, and climate resilience, which inform policy decisions.
  2. Develop Policies and Strategies: Through its academic expertise, IUL supports the creation of strategies addressing SDG-related issues, often providing insights from faculty research and student projects.
  3. Model Future Scenarios: The university participates in scenario planning workshops and research, using data to project potential outcomes with or without interventions.
  4. Monitoring and Reporting: IUL engages in projects to assess the impact of SDG initiatives and shares findings with policymakers to guide improvements.
  5. Enabling Adaptive Management: By hosting forums and offering expertise, the university aids in creating policies that are flexible and responsive to changing conditions.

The university’s initiatives are supported by its collaborations with NGOs, governmental organizations, and international entities, aligning its goals with Lebanon’s national SDG framework.

SDG 17.2.1: IUL has direct involvement in, or input into, national government SDG policy development

The Islamic University of Lebanon is a member of the association of universities in Lebanon (Universities Association of Lebanon). Universities Association of Lebanon is involved in achieving sustainability goals.

The Council of the Universities Association of Lebanon met at the campus of the University of Sagesse, Furn al-Shabak, and was unanimously elected:

  • President of the Association of Universities of Lebanon: Professor Father Salim Dakkache, President of Saint Joseph University;
  • Vice President of the Association of Universities of Lebanon: Prof. Dina Al-Mawla, President of the Islamic University of Lebanon.
  • Secretary of the Association of Universities of Lebanon: Dr. Elie Karam, University of Balamand;
  • Treasurer of the Association of Universities of Lebanon: Prof. Dr. Rajaa Fakhoury, Beirut Arab University.

Accountant of the Association of Universities of Lebanon: Professor Noura Hanna, Antonine University.

The Universities Association of Lebanon (UAOLB) is the representative body for the leading public and private research universities in Lebanon.

Through consultation and collaborative projects, UAOLB develops strategies and policies to advance Scientific Research and Higher Education in Lebanon.

Its purpose is to ensure maximizing the Universities’ contribution to Lebanon’s social, cultural and economic well-being.
